From their educational and life experiences, my parents distilled a few important principles and lessons, which they have passed on to my brothers and myself. First, there are few things more important in our society than family and education. As African-Americans struggling against the tide of institutional discrimination, my parents discovered that education and a strong sense of family are very important to maturing children. Consequently, I grew up with an enhanced sense of self and more self-esteem than many individuals of my age and background.

Second, my parents showed me the importance of striving to attain these benefits. Middle-class status was not given to my parents; they had to work hard for it. te. I want to be able to address the liability problems of corporate fiduciaries at the planning, drafting, and investing stages in order to help them avoid litigation. As a corporate counsel, I could help direct the operations of a company, advising the directors and managers as to the possible human consequences of their actions. I could help them foresee the potential reactions of employees and outsiders. I could then help them fashion policies and strategies within the human and societal dimensions, while still focusing upon the economic objectives. However, there is more to my ambition to become a lawyer than just assisting business clients. My parents taught me that I bear a special obligation to society as a whole as a result of my education. I am responsible for using my education to improve society; I am responsible for utilizing my knowledge in the pursuit of a better community; I am responsible for applying my innate and acquired skills to the task of helping others in this world.
