The fact that the work ethic and capitalism became firmly ingrained thereafter is a product of the capitalist forces Weber says predated the Calvinists and lasted after the Reformation period. Weber does say that capitalism would have developed in any case, but it became associated with certain attitudes derived from Protestant religious doctrine for historical reasons.
