Standardized testing has become an integral part of student learning from elementary school to high school levels. Due to the increase in standardized testing, it is vital for educators to be aware of the impact of test anxiety on student performance (Supon, 2004). Over the last several decades, researchers have highlighted the adverse impact of test anxiety on student performance, regardless of the students' grade levels or previous academic achievement; test anxiety is a key factor in undermining student performance (McDonald, 2001).
As testing becomes increasingly frequent and common in the lives of test-anxious students, test anxiety can lead to long-term effects such as negative attitudes towards learning. Anxious students may exhibit symptoms of depression, impulsivity, hyperactivity and fatigue that extend beyond the time frame of the test-taking (Cheek, Bradley, Reynolds, & Coy, 2002). Effects of specific programs designed to eliminate this test anxiety must be determined.
In Jacksonville, Florida, 65% of students failed math and reading (FCAT scores) in 2005. Since test anxiety may be an important factor related to student failure, an anxiety intervention program was implemented at a local high school in Jacksonville. Effects of this program must be assessed.
