The ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment removed one of the greatest institutional barriers to womenÆs influence and participation in U.S. government. The NAWSA served as the nucleus for what became the League of Women Voters. From this point on women would play an increasing role in determining the shape of U.S. government.

Local: On the local level chapters of the League of Women Voters helped educate women about their right to vote, waging voter registration campaigns in communities across the country.

Government: The passage of legislation to provide women with the right to vote would usher in a new era of government legislation that would promote greater equality for women and participation in all aspects of life from politics and education to employment and sexuality.

Conflict: The imbalance of power between men and women swung more toward middle ground due to the conflict that erupted over suffrage that resulted in passage of the Nineteenth Amendment.

4) 1932 - (Welfare) The Emergency Relief Act of 1932 is passed into law.

The Emergency Relief Act signified a shift in relief efforts that included greater federal assistance to states. Hundreds of millions of dollars in loam monies were made available to the states as the depression continued to drain local and state efforts to help the needy.

Local: On the local level, religious organizations like the Salvation Army and others continued to use what little resources were available to help the needy through soup kitchens, shelter, and other services.

Government: As national protests began to escalate in light of failed efforts on behalf of government to ease the impact of the depression, state and local legislators lobbied the federal government for an increase in availability of assistance funding.
