III. Conclusion: Despite some evidence of its success, bilingual education should not be offered in U.S. public schools because it is proven to be ineffective, costly, and harmful to the unity of U.S. society and culture.

A. Government officials need to ban federal, state and local funding from being used to provide bilingual education in public schools.

B. Students must rely more on family members, friends, or community organizations to help them acquire English language skills.

With public educators facing increased accountability for performance outcomes among students and dwindling budgets, the provision of bilingual education and its efficacy continue to remain one of public educationÆs most controversial issues. Bilingual education represents ôinstruction of core or required subjects such as mathematics, science, and language arts in the studentÆs native language while he or she learns or masters Englishö (Webb, Mehta, and Jordan 292).

Despite AmericaÆs increasingly diverse population and student body, many educators, government officials, and other Americans remain opposed to bilingual education for a number of reasons. Chief among the reasons is the perception that bilingual education fails to provide any special educational or developmental benefits to students. Another reason for opposition to bilingual education is the belief that it adds to already overburdened teacherÆs responsibilities and adds additional costs to already overtaxed budgets.
