Business Writing Skills Workshop

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The effective formal essay should incorporate the same adage that applies to effective speech giving; tell your audience what you are going to say (introduction), say it (body), and then restate what you have just said (conclusion). Such a formula leads to organization, clarity, and reinforces the concept of knowing your audience, all elements of effective business writing. In todayÆs highly information and communication based organization, Messmer (2001) contends that ôwriting skills are no longer simply an advantage, theyÆre a necessityö (8). Poor writing skills lead to a variety of problems, including hurt feelings, lowered morale, a waste of time and money, and even the loss of business. Messmer (2001) contends that there are ôsteps you can take to improve your [writing] skills and confidence.ö Doug McPherson, author and manager of McPhersonÆs Word Pub, a writing and public relations firm, argues that ôwriting is like any other skill-it can be improvedö (Better 2001, 2). Writing workshops are crucial for helping employees and managers develop the essential writing skills of sound written communication. Essentials of good writing skills such as organization of thoughts and structure, good grammar, clarity and concision, and the process of proofreading and editing all readily lend themselves to the workshop environment. There are a number of sound writing skill improvement methods and business writing textbooks to help implement a successful writing workshop. Vassallo (1993) has come up with a wr
