Another point of PrimoratzÆ I agree with is his contention that SolomonÆs views on movement, touch and gesture. Solomon argues basically any activity is sexual if it represents ôan attempt to communicate mutual feelings through bodily gestures, touches, and movementsö (Primoratz, YEAR, p. 39). Clearly parents and children communicate mutual feelings all the time in this manner without there being any sexual intentions, as do good friends. SolomonÆs theory is too broad here and he often contradicts himself, such as when he maintains sex is ôàalways personal and deeply revealing,ö which is exposed as shortsighted when one considers prostitution or casual sex or a one night stand (Primoratz, YEAR, p. 40). As such, while SolomonÆs highlighting of the communicative aspect of sex is illuminating, it does not fully explain this complex human phenomenon definitively.
Personally, I believe that any theory of sexuality that can even come close to being ôcompleteö will encompass the hedonistic, procreation, and love philosophies associated with sex. Only a combination of the three explain the popularity of masturbation or commercial sex, while also accounting for intimate relationship sex or procreation. However, sexuality is perhaps one of the most if not the most complex of human phenomenon. As such, there may be some aspects of sexual behavior that we will never fully comprehend.
