and clothing, inadequate access to health and mental health services, and to be located within low-income and physically-deteriorating communities" (Guiterrez and Lewis 96). The feminist movement has traditionally ignored problems unique to women of color. For instance, abortion has almost exclusively dominated the agenda for white women in terms of reproductive rights. However, important reproductive rights issues for women of color, such as forced sterilization, has largely been ignored. The feminist movement must take on a more inclusionary structure before the gap can be bridged between minority women and their white counterparts.
The role of the social worker is another issue addressed in all three essays. Devore emphasizes that social workers must be sensitive to the cultural values and uniqueness of their client populations: "The primary level of involvement is the most intimate, requiring racial, ethnic, cultural, and linguistic identity with the community" (66). Successful intervention requires entry into the community. Toward this end, it is often more appropriate for the social worker to be of the same ethnicity as his or her client population. In the secondary level of community involvement, the social worker acts as an intermediary between the client population and the community at large. Such labels as liaison, broker, or advocate describe this role. This role, too, requires ethnic and cultural solidarity with the client community. In the social worker's tertiary role, ethnic or cultural solidarity is not as critical. This level can be assumed by committed individuals outside the community who work for its common good (Devore 66-67).
