Guiterrez and Lewis contend that successful community organizing for women of color requires that the social worker establish a presence in the community. Granted, the first step is acquiring an intimate knowledge about the community and its institutions, but once this knowledge is attained, the facilitator must begin to participate in community activities. Being perceived as an outsider or an insider can make all the difference in the level of trust that a social worker establishes with her client population.
