College/University Dropout Rate

programs.

The study's purposes will be accomplished by supplying Admissions Officers of all colleges with a survey instrument designed by the researcher. This instrument will require Admissions Officers to provide, from college records, enrollment and drop-out data, collected both before and after retention programs were instituted.

Further, the instrument will require Admissions Officers to identify their programs as Pre-admission selection programs, Post-admission counseling/guidance programs, and/or supplementary service programs such as tutoring or mentoring programs. Also, Admissions Officers will be asked a number of questions regarding their program's involvement with respect to factors important to attrition and retention. For example, one theoretical model holds that attrition is often due to socioeconomic factors (Pincus, 1980). Admissions Officers will therefore be asked to supply, on the basis of their expert opinion, an estimate of the extent to which admissions/drop-out data indicate attrition due to students' low socioeconomic status.

The study seeks to answer the following research questions:

1) What are the kinds of retention programs that the selected colleges typically institute?

2) Has the attrition rates for newly entering freshmen been reduced as a result of colleges' retention programs?

3) Has the overall attrition rates been reduced as a result of colleges' retention programs?

4) To what extent do admissions officers estimate drop-out to be due to personal problems of students?

5) To what extent do admissions officers estimate drop-out to be due to interpersonal, social and peer problems?

6) To what extent do admissions officers estimate drop-out to be due to socioeconomic problems such as problems with finances?

7) To what extent do admissions officers estimate drop-out to be due to failure of the college environment to assist students to feel a part of campus life?
