While this study does not test theory related to college retention programs, there are a number of conceptual assumptions which underlie the research. Specifying these assumptions will clarify the nature of the research. The first conceptual assumption relates to the fact that the existing literature indicates that due to the need to retain students in school, colleges and universities have, in the last 10 to 15 years, developed a number of new, strong and innovative retention programs.

As shown in the review of literature, most of the developed programs have been found to be effective in reducing attrition. Based on these findings, one of the assumptions of this study is that the likelihood is strong that the programs examined will be found to be effective.
