Graciliano Ramos’ book, Vidas Secas (Barren Lives), represents a work of Brazilian literature from the 1930s whose impact on me remains pervasive. The book details the chronic misery of a Brazilian family living in abject poverty. Artistic in its portrayal of the desolation and despair such families often endure, the work created great empathy in me for the unfortunate. I became determined to become a philanthropist who could help society care for such families through education, healthcare and economic programs.
