uses dot the landscape and weather in the region provides the full splendor of each of the four seasons, with spectacularly beautiful fall foliage. State College provides a variety of shopping, dining, entertainment and services options. However, being a college town, the prices are higher than average when compared to areas surrounding the town. PSU, with more than 44,000 full time students, provides an extra bustle and excitement to the area, as well as ensuring that local businesses and service providers do well throughout most of the year (Education 2). Summer boasts the annual Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, a five day affair which sees more than a quarter million people travel through the area enjoying artworks from nationally renown artists as well as a host of other activities, foods, and events (Downtown 3).
While those without education and some with exhibit prejudice towards minorities or those of a non-heterosexual persuasion, the area does boast diverse peoples and cultures. Walking downtown one might see an Amish man skateboarding, be served coffee by a woman wearing a Mennonite bonnet, and talk to a man whose Scottish Irish ancestors settled the valley over two centuries ago. The community is geared mainly toward retired people and those raising families, while younger people including thousands of college students often find their needs are last on the agenda list, particularly when it comes to things such as parking, rental housing, and other factors of State College life.
