I am also hoping to elicit diverse points of view of the problem that will generate possibilities for exploring the problem from different angles (Freedman & Combs, 1996, pp. 126-7). In addition, my objective in asking both Haydee and Kevin to talk about their concerns is to enable me to identify the presenting problemùthe first step in solution-focused therapy (Molnar & de Shazer, 1987, p. 353).

In response to my question about their reason for coming to therapy, Haydee highlights several problems: a) Kevin's aggression against his peers by threatening to kill them and choking a girl; b) Kevin's inability to maintain his interaction with others in a play activity; c) Kevin's frequent arguments with his brothers who bother him; and d) His lack of interest in school.

Contrary to Haydee's interest in explaining the problem to me, Kevin remains largely unresponsive throughout this clip. His complete disinterest in the session is reflected in his slumped position on the couch. At the same time, his restlessness is demonstrated by his fidgeting behavior. In an effort to determine his feelings about coming to therapy and willingness to modify his behavior, I use the solution-focused approach by posing a scaling question (Berg & Gallagher, 1991, p. 99). Even though Kevin still does not respond verbally about his comfort level about the therapy, Haydee is able to get Kevin to indicate that he does not want to be in therapy.

I engage Kevin in the process of exploring his feelings and attitudes about his interactions with others.
