However, the competition in America from the major players in our industry, combined with the growth of the electronic organizers has seriously threatened our long-range prospects.

Barriers for United States Expansion

Timing and size of orders from large customers;

Timing and size of orders for new products;

Competition, especially for retail shelf space;

The health of the retail environment;

Foreign exchange rate fluctuations;

Supply constraints; and supplier performance.

Among the effects of these barriers may be:

Higher than anticipated product returns and/or excess inventory;

Negative effects on consumer purchases;

Lower than anticipated gross profit;

Higher than anticipated operating expenses; and

To survive, it will be essential to expand our marketing efforts overseas. We are in the process of considering further manufacturing and marketing efforts in Europe, in Malaysia, and exporting our products into the Middle East. Because of the scarcity of trees in the desert, it would be necessary to import all raw paper stock into that region, and then to print and bind the materials there (Mostafa, 1997). Such an activity would seriously impact our already slim margins, and necessitate charging a higher price for our products.

Such a product line as that offered by Jot-It requires a dynamic market that is on an upward growth curve. It also requires satisfactory distribution channels and a distribution and marketing infrastructure that supports the importation of new personal improvement products.
