The Relationship Between Patient Readiness and Cognitive Rehabilitation Intervention

ogeneity of TBI, the very type and consequent efficacy of cognitive rehabilitation interventions, and the validity of selected outcome measures.

Research has reported the prevalence of TBI and its debilitating results. The effective use of cognitive rehabilitation for treatment of the TBI patient is also reported extensively, however most studies are theoretical. A review of the literature pointed out the need for empirical research to determine the efficacy of cognitive rehabilitation for treatment of TBI (Jordan, 2000). Charney, Chesnut, Maynard, Mann, Patterson, and Helfand (1999) conducted a meta analysis regarding the effects of rehabilitation on TBI patients, to include timing and intensity of early and acute rehabilitation. These authors also investigated the effects of cognitive rehabilitation on outcomes for TBI patients. Two randomized controlled trials and one observational study showed evidence that specific forms of cognitive rehabilitation did reduce memory failures and anxiety and improve interpersonal relationships and self-confidence in TBI patients. The authors recommended that future research investigate subject variables to determine when the client is ready for the cognitive intervention and what the markers of that readiness are.

Therefore a study was needed at this juncture, that includes an empirical investigation of subject variables with regard to when the TBI patient is ready for the cognitive intervention and what the markers of that readiness are. This would determine whether these variables are mediators in effects of cognitive rehabilitation.

A review of the literature indicates that TBI is a principal cause of death and disability in young adults. These disabilities include long-term cognitive, behavioral, and social disorders (Salazar, et al., 2000). Many factors are involved, for example neurological damage may not occur in total at the moment of impact and may include secondary...
