Long recovery programs include cognitive rehabilitation techniques that have not been empirically investigated. Thus, the efficacy of their use is in question and a study is needed to resolve this issue. Since randomized clinical study of this topic is difficult, a preliminary study to include archival research, must first be conducted to determine when a patient is ready for cognitive treatment and what the markers of this readiness are.

Research has pointed out that medical treatment for the TBI individual reaches an end-point at which the use of cognitive rehabilitation has proven to be beneficial (Ghajar, 2000). While some research has indicated the efficacy of cognitive treatment, further study of this topic is needed.
