1. The Daughters of Akhenaten (Egyptian, c. 1365 B.C.) and Prince Rahotep and His Wife Nofret (Egyptian, c. 2,610 B.C.) are Egyptian works widely separated in time. The first is a mural, and the second is carved from painted limestone. The figures in both cases are seen in profile and are idealized.

2. Victory Stele of Naram-Sin (Sumerian, c. 2,300-2,200 B.C.) and the "Harvester Vase" (Minoan, c. 1550-1500 B.C.) are from different cultures and yet use similar images. Each presents images of numerous warriors. The Sumerian piece is made up of a series of nearly identical images representing different soldiers at different levels on the side of a hill, rising to the sun. The figures are separated from one another, while on the Minoan vase the figures are close together, all facing the same direction, with a sense of action and confusion emerging from the fact that the warriors are all together.

3. The Sack of the City of Hamanu by Ashurbanipal (Assyrian, 650 B.C.) and Darius and Xerxes Giving Audience (Persian, c. 490 B.C.) present different historical scenes.
