4. "Octopus Vase" (Minoan, c. 1500 B.C.)and the Dipylon Vase (Greek, geometric style, c. 8th century B.C.) are functionally similar. The Minoan vase has a small neck and a rounded body and stands on a small base. The octopus figure spreads across the side of the vase in a wavy pattern. The Greek vase has a wide mouth, a cup-like body, and a large base, and the images are painted in geometric levels around the outside, with both geometric and representational figures evident.

5. Kore, from Chios (Greek, Archaic, c. 520 B.C.) and Dying Niobid (Greek, Classical, c. 450-440 B.C.) are each carved from marble. The Kore piece is in the archaic style and is similar to other images of the same female figure, always clothed, in this case with the clothing painted. The Greek piece is more animated. The female figure is now unclothed, and the drapings of the cloak she is removing are depicted in folds.
