Child Maltreatment & Abuse Study

child to the treatment agency, to the number of abusers, the incidence of abuse of other children or siblings, chronicity of abuse, or to the use of bribes or threats.

It was found that there was a greater incidence of physical evidence of sexual abuse among girls. Farber (1984) suggested that failure to find many significant gender differences indicated that offender variables such as power over a helpless victim may be more influential in choice of victim than sex of the child.

It should be noted, however, that most statistical and demographic findings in the area of child abuse are to be only tentatively accepted. This point has been made by Alter-Reid (1986) who, in a comprehensive review of empirical findings, noted that her analysis showed that a good deal of the existing research is methodologically poor. Specifically, Alter-Reid stated that this research suffers from small sample sizes, and inadequate comparison groups. Also, she reported that there is a need for both better design methodology and explanatory models of abuse.

Alcoholism and depression have been associated with childhood maltreatment in some studies but not in others (Farmularo, Barum & Stone, 1986). Because of these mixed findings, Miller (1983) has noted that over the last few decades, there has been debate, controversy and lack of expert consensus regarding how childhood maltreatment is related to alcoholism.

One clear possibility that may explain divergent findings is the notion that findings differ depending upon degree of childhood maltreatment. In other words, one may or may not become an alcohol and/or develop depressive disorders depending upon how severely he/she was abused as a child. The research problem proposed for examination is a test of this notion.

The research problem can be characterized as having the practical purpose of investigating whether indices of depression and related psychiatric symptoms (as measured by the Bec...
