According to candidate research, the three "buzz" words in nationwide campaigns of this year, are "Washington," "new," and "liberal." An excerpt from the Los Angeles Times weaves the three words into context. "Most candidates around the country running for federal office suggest that they know what's wrong in Washington, that they possess something new and that the other guy is liberal--or, in the case of Democratic candidates, that they themselves are moderate, rather than liberal" (Rosenstiel A-22).

In this year of negative campaigning, president Clinton's image has been used and abused repeatedly. Republicans have "morphed" the faces of their Democratic rivals into Clinton's in an effort to disparage a new, liberal candidate who will continue to bloat an already out-of-control Washington. Those candidates who "vote with Clinton" are also held up to derision. Clinton is presumably running the country, rather than running for office. However, it can be argued that a president never stops running for office. Unfortunately, he has become a gauge by which to measure anti-Democratic sentiment among Republicans.

Former President Jimmy Carter is planning another diplomatic mission to the Korean peninsula, but Clinton Administration officials are worried that the irrepressible former president might say something to endanger delicate negotiations over North Korea's nuclear program.

Strained relations between North and South Korea have created a political instability that is even more complicated by North Korea's production of nuclear weapons. The Clinton Administration is willing to let Carter resolve differences between North and South Korea, but it does not want him to get involved in negotiations over the nuclear issue.
