ion begun in 1925 brought a new hospital building with a bed capacity of 65 by 1928. A new wing that added 44 beds the hospital's capacity was added in 1940. Yet another expansion increased bed capacity at Dover to 147 in 1957. This expansion also added maternity and pediatric sections, and outpatient clinic, and radiology and operating room departments to the hospital.

By 1978, Dover's bed capacity had reached 290, and facilities had been added that permitted to hospital to offer comprehensive healthcare services to the community. In this year also, Dover General Hospital changed its name to Dover General Hospital and Medical Center.

Four years later, in 1982, ground was broken for the most comprehensive renovation and construction program undertaken in the hospital's history. In addition to the additional 160,000 square feet of new construction, renovations were made to many departments and floors. This renovation and construction program transformed Dover General Hospital and Medical Center into a modern, progressive medical center capable of providing high-quality, cost effective healthcare services to the residents of Northwestern New Jersey. An advanced Radiation Treatment Center was constructed in 1988.

Immediately prior to the merger, Dover General had a bed capacity of 324. The hospital had accredited 300 board-certified physicians at that time.

St. Clares(Riverside Medical Center (hereinafter referred to as St. Clares) was incorporated in 1985, as a product of the merger of St. Clares and Riverside Hospitals. At the time of the merger of St. Clares and Dover General, St. Clares provided inpatient acute and specialized care at three campuses.

The St. Clares Sussex campus originally was Wallkill Valley Hospital created by a merger of Franklin Hospital and Alexander Linn Hospital. Franklin Hospital was founded in 1908. By 1950, Franklin was a full-service, 35-bed hospital providing acute, emergency, and ...
