Federal support money was cut prior to the completion of the expansion, however, with the results that the expanded hospital had inadequate x-ray capabilities and other inappropriate shortcomings. The hospital's service area stagnated, and Linn Hospital began to experience a serious under use of capacity. By 1979, both Franklin and Linn Hospitals were experiencing financial distress and the State of new Jersey ordered a merger of the two institutions.

The St. Clares Boonton township campus was the former Riverside Hospital that was opened in 1955. By 1974, the hospital's bed capacity had increased to 160. A prosperous hospital, Riverside merged with St. Clares in 1985 in a move to better position the two institutions in the evolving healthcare environment in the United States.
