st that an effective English language arts curriculum nurtures students= sense of their common ground in order to prepare them for responsible participation in civic life, while respecting differences in home backgrounds. An effective history and social science curriculum recognizes each person as an individual, and encourages respect for human and civil rights. Health education contributes to the capacity of students to work in a positive manner with families, school staff, peers, and community members to enhance personal health and create a safe and supportive environment which acknowledges individual differences (Vigue, 1999). This kind of curriculum will give an all-round approach to new school design which looks at all aspects of student needs.

We live in a technological era, and education reform must address the needs of students to succeed in this type of society. Public schools need to provide knowledge to help students obtain meaningful employment once they leave school (Lynch, 2000). Research on how students learn is essential to allow educators to motivate students, and to help them find connections between school and the real world. Curriculums must provide the foundation for long-term employment and lifelong learning. Contextual learning and teaching needs to be brought into the classroom. Work-based learning experiences need to be part of the learning process for all students. Students, parents, and community and business leaders need to work together to provide a meaningful education for students which will prepare them for success in the real world.

Realistic assessment of student achievement based on high standards, substantive knowledge, and effective practice must be instituted by making sure standardized tests include authentic assessment of workplace knowledge and skills (Lynch, 2000).
