lace in the world. There is, however, little work available in Calabria for a young man with his education and talents. The main culprit, again, is the continuing rural nature of our region. There is little demand for young lawyers down here. Men educated in the law are valuable in societies with considerable commercial activity and industry. Contracts must be drafted and interpreted, commercial relationships must be managed, and complex disputes settled. In an area which is mostly agricultural, however, there is little for lawyers to do. Commerce is simple, complex contracts are few, and disputes are fairly basic. Even government relations down here do not require the services of more than a few lawyers, such as myself. Much of my work consists of dealing with the national government and the governments of other provinces. There is no need for more than a few lawyers to represent Calabria in its dealings with other governments.
