m attack as well as succor to those in need. The paper begins with a brief examination of the general nature of angels, then goes on to explore the various categories of interactions angels have with Mankind.

Who or what are angels? According to Douglas (1982), angels are creations of God; they are also a class of beings different from Man. Angels, Douglas reports, are familiar with God, seeing Him face to face. They are also holy, uncorrupted spirits endowed with free will and of unquestionable integrity, goodwill and obedience to God.

In more New Age religious views, the bible-based conceptualizations of angels such as those provided by Douglas (1982) are, to a large extent, accepted with the exception of the notion of angels somehow being of a different class of beings. In this regard, Burt (1997), who spent several years researching angelic encounters experienced by people of diverse religious backgrounds, reported that many of those holding New Age views believe that people who die and go to Heaven can become angels themselves.

In other words, if one's mother or grandmother dies, then in the views of some of those holding New Age beliefs, that person can become a sort of guardian angel watching over and protecting certain members of the family. Burt (1997) also notes that some of the more extreme New Age views characterize angels as aspects of the divine part of human consciousness and that in Heaven, humans and angels will merge into one being.

Despite the foreoging characterization, most of the world's major religions, like the bible, characterize angels as quite personal in nature. For example, Islam discusses the angel Ridwan as the guardian of Heaven, while Christianity speaks of Gabriel as a personal messenger of God who will blow the last trumpet call announcing the final judgement, and, of course, Judaism shares many personal characterizations of angels along with Christianity such as the angel Ra...
