While the influence of the West may outweigh other nations at the present time, this may one day be the reverse case as non-Western nations continue to exert their influence on the global market through economic and political means. As one European commented, ôàinternational Internet governanceùmultilateralismùis the only way for Europeans to effectively reduce the indirect unilateral U.S. dominance of Internet regulation,ö (Vick in Morris, & Waisbord, 2001, p. 19). Different conceptions and perceptions of free speech, decency, sexuality, social interaction and other cultural aspects continue to influence the degree to which the global community becomes homogenized by all nationsÆ beliefs through economic and political control.

While there is infiltration of the homogenization of Western values and culture through media and entertainment in the global village, there is no denying that at the present time the U.S. enjoys the military, political, and economic power to dwarf non-Western countries in impact. Hoskins, McFadyen, & Finn (1997, p. 66) discuss this uneven playing field when they discuss the mega-mergers that have occurred in the U.S. media: ôEuropeans will have no chance to catch up with the structural advantage the big media mergers have created for the Americans; the vertical integration of production and distribution plus the bandwidth of profit windows, the marketing of a film through a chain of money-making outletsàall in one hand.ö

Therefore, having such an advantageous position in the global village, it is Western values (i.e., American values) that continue to drive the global village with respect to homogenization.
