Even if the wife were an experienced businesswoman, the role of the mediator would not change. The mediator must perform the task of assisting the couple in achieving their goals and objectives in mediation. If the wife was under treatment for severe depression, the mediator may wish to recommend that she seek medical assistance as well. The mediator should not withdraw unless some pressing reason presents itself such as a conviction that the wife in this case has somehow been intimidated into giving up her rights. This is a case in which the mediator must be cautious because he or she is not allowed to practice law but it is apparent that the woman needs the assistance of an attorney.
