In the United States, Jews were not dominant in the American newspaper industry. They were, however, prominently represented in the industry. From the beginning, however, Jews played an important role in the radio industry in the United States.

Following the end of the Second World War, the role of Jews in American mass media increased in importance. This statement is not intended to parrot the contentions of right-wing lunatics in the United States who assert the existence of a vast Jewish conspiracy in American mass media. The post-war situation in Germany developed differently that was the case in the United States. The forced emigration of Jews from Nazi Germany in the 1930s created a near population vacuum for German Jews. Thus, while Jews are present in the mass media industries in Germany, their industry prominence does not rise to the level of that in the United States.

Statement of Purpose and Background

The purpose of the proposed research project is to conduct two studies that investigated mass media depiction of Jewish scholars. The first study will compare and contrast depictions of Jewish scholars in post-World War II (May 1945-through-2006) newspapers in the United States and in Germany. Comparative factors will include (a) frequency of mention of a scholar's religion, (b) frequency of mention of a scholar's academic affiliation, (c) placement within a newspaper of an article on a scholar, and (d) length of the article (column inches). The second study will compare and contrast depictions of Jewish scholars in newspapers in the United States from 1920 through April 1945.
