although "Most people believe that they get a job because they have the right skills, the right experience and the right attitude," and thus launch their job search based on communicating those criteria to companies, in fact, the real reason people get hired is that "Executives and senior decision-makers...have a problem they think you can solve for them and you cost less than the problem does." Hewitt (2003, p. 28) compares posting a resume online with phrases such as "Looking for challenging opportunity to..." with the man standing next to the highway off-ramp with a cardboard sign that reads "Will work for food-anything helps." Hewitt (2003, p. 28) says that these two attempts at getting employment are "Different highway, same sign." As Hewitt (2003, p. 28) puts it, "That is why the traditional approaches don't work. You've got the value proposition backwards." He argues that potential employers are not looking for people they can provide six-figure jobs with benefits to but people who can do something for them, and-he asserts-"they want you to prove it before they'll hire you" (Hewitt, 2003, p. 28).

This is where knowing the right person makes the difference. A job seeker who has a former work acquaintance or friend that is familiar with his talents and strengths has a built-in advocate. If that acquaintance happens to work at the company where he would like to work or to know someone in authority there, the job seeker has an advantage, because that acquaintance can bridge the gap between the company's problem that it is looking to solve and the job seeker who has the ability to solve it.

This principle in its most simplistic form suggests that connecting with as many people as possible through networking scenarios is the best way to get a job. However, this is only partially true.
