The test has four primary sections that include Listening, Structure (speaking or grammar), Reading, and Writing. The test taking time ranges from three to four and one half hours, with 40 to 90 minutes spent on the Listening questions, 15 to 20 minutes spent on Structure, 60 to 90 minutes spend on Reading, and 30 to 50 minutes spend on Writing (Eduers, 2010; ETS, 2009). Students are able to take notes during the test and these notes are collected after the test (ETS, 2009). For this assessment individuals are asked to read a passage, listen to a lecture, and write or speak about what has been understood. The TOEFL test measures the ability to integrate these four English skills which makes it "the most comprehensive academic English test available (ETS, 2009, p. 1).

Thus, the TOEFL test is designed to assess an individual's ability to understand and use the English language as it is spoken, heard, read, and written in the university classroom. This test is accepted in over 7,300 universities, institutions, and agencies in over 130 countries for admission criteria at 4,500 test sites worldwide. Almost every college and university in the UK and Australia use this test for this purpose. The TOEFL test is offered in more locations worldwide than any other English-language test (ETS, 2009).

The TOEFL is also referred to as the TOEFL iBT test. This stands for Internet-based Test. Thus, the TOEFL has two versions, the paper-based version (PBT) and the internet-based version (iBT). The TOEFL iBT tests the same four areas as the paper-based TOEFL: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. In 2005 the TOEFL iBT became available in the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy, France, and Puerto Rico.
