Measuring Perceptions of Staff

open-ended questions will be used for the study. The closed-ended question will be used since they are easier to code and statistically analyze. However, the disadvantage of the closed-ended question is that it presents only a small set of alternatives from which to answer, and findings from answers may be limited. With this type of question, alternatives presented may be ones that the respondent might never have presented on their own, and questions may be misinterpreted. Open-ended questions during face-to-face interviews will therefore also be used to allow for subjects to answer questions in a more complete manner, with a potential to reveal additional information that may not have been anticipated by the experimenter.

The population will include faculty, staff, Deans, and Directors from three community colleges located in central Texas: Central Texas College (CTC) located in Killeen, Texas; Austin Community College (ACC) located in Austin Texas; and Temple College located south of Waco, Texas. The population for CTC includes staff and faculty (926 teaching faculty, 1022 other staff) and deans (nine), associate deans (seven), division directors (eight), and directors (41). The population for ACC includes 1,362 staffing table personnel with 407 full-time teaching faculty and 1,040 adjunct faculty. The population for Temple College includes 85 full-time faculty, five administrators, 69 professional and technical staff, 82 classified, and 149 part-time faculty, with a total of 390 personnel.

Subjects will include a random selection of these faculty, staff, deans, associate deans, division directors, and directors from all three campuses. Subjects from any other of the six CTC campuses will not be included. Subjects will volunteer to participate in the study. Subjects will be chosen according to their job title. Subjects will live within driving distance of the Texas campus.
