Adaptation Model of Nursing

daptive components in Mai-Lynn's case can be said to be:

1. Physiological needs - Mai-Lynn is in a great deal of pain from a swollen arm with a third-degree burn; the injury took place three days prior to her admission to emergency and the arm is unhealed. Mai-Lynn is pale and diaphoric. She is tired from three nights of disturbed sleep and has experienced a loss of appetite since she was first injured.

2. Role Function - Mai-Lynn functions is several demanding roles. These include: mother of two young children; spouse; daughter; sister; and employee.

A basic postulate of the model is that stress increases with multiple role functions (Roy, 1984) and therefore, it can be stated that Mai-Lynn's psychosocial role functions are likely to contribute to the stress she is experiencing as a result of the injury. Examination of her case, shows that at least one of these role functions, that of mother, is indeed contributing a great deal of stress to her situation. Her primary concern is for the well-being of her children because no one in the family appears able to take care of them both day and night

3. Interdependence - Mai-Lynn is very interdependent with respect to her family. She relies on her mother to watch her children. She works at a restaurant owned by her brother and his wife. In her concern regarding who will take care of her children, she does not seem to recognize that there may be non-family options.

It is likely that she is overly interdependent upon her family as shown by the fact that in the information provided about the case, there appears to be little interdependence on neighbors or community resources. For example, although the burn was at the third-degree level, an attempt was made to treat it using a "special jelly" given to her by her mother and medical services were not sought until she had been in severe pain for three days.

4. Self-Concept - Mai-Lynn's self-concept appears to be so...
