Basic Product and Employee Organization
Nutrition- products, advice, one-on-one consultation requires a far greater care in product mix and trained employees than almost any other department within Target stores. Since Target already sells some vitamin and supplement products, as well as foods, this marketing plan needs to concentrate on (1) product mix, (2) department location, and (3) employee selection and training. Later on, we will provide input for marketing and advertising, customer appeal and growth goals.
There are literally hundreds of products on the market, from vitamin supplements, to tablets of zinc, copper, and a combination of vitamins and minerals. There are herbal remedies, teas, "booster" drinks and supplements. While Target already carries nutritional and vitamin products, it is time to upgrade and update the product mix to include those most asked for by customers who may be buying products at health food stores and specialty stores like GNC. How to achieve this? Bring on board several expert nutrition experts from various parts of the country. They will be asked to provide input as to the product mix, which may be different in different parts of the Target store locations. One can see that nutritional products would be different in wintry New England than in sunny California or Arizona. In addition, the product mix needs to focus on (1) children (2) young adults, and (3) the aging.
One additional profitable product area that Target has overlooked to date: Vitamins and nutritional supplements for pets! Again, a council of veterinarians, or veterinary specialists from universities might propose a product mix for dogs and cats- from puppies and kittens to older animals.
