The issues that new entrants in the job market face are not new. Students have been faced with the challenges of finding jobs for as long as schools have turned out graduates. However, the American educational system has come under increased criticism in recent years, and downsizing and layoffs have increased the number of professionals competing with students for job ("Creative Downsizing" S08).
The purpose of this research is to determine a plan for recent graduates seeking employment. The research takes into account the current economic environment, the sources of competition that the candidate faces, ways to approach the various parts of the job search, and considers the negative effect that perceptions of the educational system can have on candidates.
The scope of the research is limited to recent college graduates, with an emphasis on business administration majors who are presumed to be entering the field of management, or a similarly related area.
Although the emphasis in college is not on finding a job but rather on amassing knowledge, college graduates have to be able to successfully find employment once their college years are over. While the task can be difficult and time consuming, it also sets the basis for the career that the candidate will follow throughout the rest of his life, with the result that the first job a college graduate finds can be of great importance for the rest of that person's life. Through careful planning, graduates can overcome the problems associated with the job search and obtain meaningful and rewarding employment.
Looking for employment begins with a job search plan. The basis for this plan is determining the type of job the candidate is looking for, then using that information to set out the best way to find that type of job.
