The problem investigated in this study was the determination of the effects a change to employee ownership has on organizational productivity. The specific purpose of this study was to assess the effects of employee ownership on organizational profitability and performance. The survey method of research was employed in the conduct of this study. Data pertaining to profitability and performance were collected for a sample of firms at two time pointsfive years prior to the occurrence of employee ownership and five years subsequent to such occurrence. Comparisons between the two sets of data were then made to assess the effects of employee ownership.
The population from which the data for this study were collected consisted of those firms that became 100 percent employeeowned during the 19761987 period. The 1987 limit permitted the collection of data for a time point five years subsequent to employee ownership (1992) for firms where employee ownership occurred in 1987.
