Chen, F., Trapido, E.J. & Davis, K. (1994). Differences in stage at presentation of breast and gynecologic cancers among whites, blacks, and Hispanics. Cancer, 73(11), 2838-2842.

Stage of breast and gynecological cancer rates were examined for black, non-Hispanic white, and white females using data drawn from the Florida Cancer Data System for Dade County. Findings were that: (1) early stage diagnoses were significantly lower among blacks and Hispanic whites than among whites for breast and cervical cancers only; (2) all three groups evidenced an increase in early stage diagnoses but for Hispanic whites, the increase was only present for cervical cancer; and (3) in situ cervical cancer was lower in women 45+ for all three groups; but it was especially low for women older than sixty five years of age. Screening implications are said to be that age and ethnic groups need to be differentially targeted.

Eley, J.W. & Associates. (1994). Racial differences in survival from breast cancer. Results of the National Cancer Institute Black/White cancer survival study. Journal of the American Medical Association, 273(13), 947-955.

This study examined whether prognostic factors explained racial differences in cancer survival rates for 1, 130 women living in Atlanta, New Orleans, and the San Francisco/Oakland areas. All women had been diagnosed with primary invasive breast cancer. Analyses using multivariate methods indicated that blacks were more likely to die than whites; however, the difference disappeared when data were adjusted for differences in the prognostic factors of stage, treatment, comorbid illness, and various socio-demographic indicators. Most racial differences in stage of diagnoses were associated with socio-demographic indicators.
