There was no intervention for this study. The research was exploratory and descriptive in nature.

Changes due to the study were the changes in the status of knowledge related to the topic, to include nine critical elements of promising school violence prevention programs and information regarding unsuccessful school violence prevention programs.

A literature review determined critical components of successful and unsuccessful school violence prevention programs and interviews with experts added to this knowledge base. The interviews ranged from 30-90 minutes and were informally organized around two questions: What do you think we know about what works in violence prevention? and Are there approaches that appear not to be effective? The interview questions were not tested for reliability and validity.

The authors reported that causes of youth crime include ineffective solutions. While there are multiple preventions, which have been implemented, only those with successful elements help eliminate violence. Since this study points out critical elements needed for success and factors which lead to a lack of success, it is concluded that program outcome is related to these factors.

Statistics were not utilized for the study. The researchers compiled information from a literature review and findings from interviews with experts.
