In the past two or more decades, there has been a great deal of research accompanied by broader views of language, consideration of its dynamic nature, and attention to many aspects and contexts of L2 learning. Often, this research focuses on the learning style of individual learners and of disparate groups of learners -- groups structured on the basis of culture, age, nationality, type of L1 language (e.g., ideographic vs. alphabetic), and so forth (Iskold, 2003).

It is the purpose of this research report to examine the relationship between learning style and L2 acquisition. Conscious learning, according to Atkinson (2002) involves a process by means of which a leader attends to form and is aware of his or her own learning process; acquisition, alternatively, is seen as a subconscious and intuitive process, similar to that used by a child to "pick up" a language. A review of relevant literature will identify the intersection of learning style or acquisition and L2 proficiency.

There are several alternative general learning theories -- the behavioral, the social, the cognitive, and so forth -- that Atkinson (20020 noted may be operating when a second language is being studied and acquired. It is not the purpose of this brief report to examine learning styles per se, but rather to consider learning styles and L2 acquisition and their relationships. Generally, Atkinson 920020 noted that a variety of cognitive strategies are employed by L2 learners, among which conceptual frameworks and memory recall or relation are important.

It has been suggested that language learners hold a set of beliefs concerning language learning and that these beliefs may influence the way they learn, even though the beliefs are not always explicitly stated.
