Human beings are genetically engineered in Brave New World. Created in test tubes, humans are genetically crated to develop one of five capacities, from the lowest capacity who serve as slave labor to the highest capacity who have intellectual curiosity but still willingly adhere to authority without question. The media is also used as a tool of control by the totalitarian state in Brave New World. Social control is kept by the use of casual sex between partners of similar levels of intelligence, while a daily dose of the drug Soma promotes general happiness and wellbeing as a permanent emotional state. The Savage tells the Controller he is opposed to an artificial existence, because he likes ôthe inconveniencesö and he doesnÆt seek ôcomfortö as much as ôI want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness, I want sinö (Huxley 163).

In OrwellÆs 1984 the state has primarily become a nameless, faceless ôBig Brotherö presence that is everywhere due to the abilities of the media, science, and technology to monitor and control the behavior of citizens. Giant telescreens that promote the message of Big Brother, with its Newspeak, are everywhere. There is virtually nowhere a citizen can be and experience privacy.
