Scopophilia is literally defined as "the love of looking" but the term also refers to "the predominantly male gaze of Hollywood cinema" ("Scopophilia," 1). It basically refers to the tendency in many Hollywood films to objectify women making them into objects that are looked at and denying them their own voice. Filmmakers in Hollywood and elsewhere use exotic spectacle |

Introduction Transhumanism is the philosophy that people are able to and should develop to higher levels in all areas. Thus, people should become more than human physically, mentally, and socially with the use of rational methods. Transhumanism is a commitment to going beyond human limits and even extending the lifespan. Intelligence is to be increased along with knowledge and to be more than human means to have control over life, personality, and identity. A human being that goes beyond being human can even leave the planet at will using reason, science, and technology. New technologies, within the transhumanism perspective will change the world to the degree that people will no longer be human (Sandberg 1). Thus, transhumanism refers to going beyond biologicals and intellectual inheritance and beyond the limits of the physical environment, culture and sociological history, and any other limits to become more than human. Technology is the most effective tool to reach |

While John Mueller (1, 2-3) advances the so-called elite democratic perspective suggesting that self-interest and inequality will inevitably characterize democracies, Paul Loeb (1, 1) contends that the popular democratic perspective individual actors at the grassroots can influence political systems and policies. In this essay, a defense of Loeb's (1, 1) will be offered in an argument that advances the idea that it is possible and necessary to "keep engaged those several million Americans who've just come in to peace and justice movements in the past couple years (Loeb, 2, 1)." Loeb (2, 1) makes the strongest case but it is necessary to understand that his case is based upon a conviction that ordinary men and women will at various times in their lives be challenged to become political active although Mueller (1, 2) is correct in asserting that this type of activism is unlikely to be a lifelong commitment. Mueller (2, 62) asserts that capitalist systems which have given rise to democracies are of necessity systems in which individuals pursue their own interests, including the accumulation of wealth. Prosperous elites have |

Abstract This case analysis explores key issues related to the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in the context of poor individuals living in the United States and in a developing country such as Venezuela. It offers an overview of government programming in the United States and Venezuela that targets treatment and intervention programs for HIV/AIDS. The literature suggests that HAART is an effective treatment protocol that can retard the progression of HIV, sustain life, and offset AIDS symptomology. However, HAART is generally delivered only under conditions wherein clinical and laboratory infrastructure is seen as sufficient to provide for the close monitoring of patients' compliance with the therapeutic regimen. HAART is a costly and complex treatment protocol and there is evidence of some resistance on the part of HIV patients' immune systems to its influence. Efforts to enhance the accessibility of this treatment strategy are highly recommended |

Project management as described Lewis (2000) can be as complex or as simple as one chooses to make it. At its most basic, project management consists of the planning, scheduling, and controlling of project activities to achieve performance, cost, and time or in objectives for a given scope of work while using resources efficiently and effectively. Small projects, said Van Vliet (2000), are often as difficult to manage larger projects, particularly when complex software development activities are involved. A project is defined as "a temporary process, which has a clearly defined start and end time, a set of tasks, and a budget, that is developed to solve a well-define goal or objective (Project management overview, 2008, p. 1)." Leadership is an integral element in the success or failure of any project. At the same time, as noted by Lewis (2000), success project are those with team members whose skills and knowledge are congruent with the tasks that must be addressed in the com |

The impact of globalization, technology, and the current economic crisis on labor-management relations and collective bargaining has been great. Although globalization has brought increased competition in markets, according to Forbes, "more U.S. workers benefit from increased trade than suffer from it" ("U.S. Workers Benefit from Globalization," 2008). Globalization will result in freer trade, which "will play a crucial role in boosting long-term U.S. growth prospects, encouraging efficient technology transfer, increasing returns-to-scale for companies and offering cheaper consumer goods" ("U.S. Workers Benefit from Globalization," 2008). Nevertheless, the impact on labor-management relations and collective bargaining is less promising. As the cases of Toyota and Nike show, globalization, technology, and the current economic crisis exert a negative impact on labor-management relations and collective bargaining. Richard D. Vogel (2008) points out that the three megatrends |

In the article "Time-of-Day Electricity Consumption Response to Temperature and the Ownership of Air Conditioning Appliances" by Lee A. Lillard and Dennis J. Aigner (1984), the authors investigate the relationship of air conditioner ownership and electricity consumption by time of day. They examine consumption in conjunction with temperature level and household responsiveness to temperature variation along with other household characteristics, highlighting the implications for "estimated consumption price elasticities" (Lillard & Aigner, 1984, p. 40). Their research examined the phenomenon of weather affecting electrical consumption and found that "the effect of air conditioning on peak period consumption ranges from essentially nothing in cool areas to a large effect in hot areas and hot months." In fact, central air conditioning raises consumption in the peak period by 20% for higher-rate customers and 34% for lower-rate customers (Lillard & Aigner, 1984, p. 50). E |

Problem Solution: Classic Airlines Classic Airlines is hampered by marketing and customer service problems that are largely due to its lack of information on customer needs and wants and its subsequent lack of responsiveness to customers. The company provides poor customer service and fails to reach its market adequately. It is not engaging in environmental scanning to learn about its market, and therefore its forecasting is based on irrelevant data. With poor segmentation, Classic is not reaching its target customer base. Based on these facts, Classic needs to revamp both its customer service and its marketing approach to make the customer's needs and wants central. Customers are disgruntled because they call in to have a problem addressed, but the problem is not addressed by the customer service technicians, who merely quote the company's rules to them. This has resulted in customer service problems and unhappy customers. Describe the Situation Issue and Oppo |

El Greco (1541-1614) was a painter of the so-called Counter-Reformation in which the Roman Catholic Church responded to the sweeping reforms demanded by the Protestant sects emerging in Europe (Adams, 312). He worked in Spain from about 1577 during the era in which Counter-Reformation influence was at its highest. According to H.W. Janson (467), the artist's early training in Venice established a strong element of Byzantine iconography and style within his work, which is often characterized as representative of the Mannerist style. Mannerism, as noted by Adams (306), had a strong propensity for virtuosity and artifice, but El Greco was placed passionately in the "service of Christian mystici |

Abstract The ethical dilemma described herein centers upon the question of whether a nurse caring for a patient with stomach ulcers whose relatives have requested an early release prior to treatment completion for financial reasons should intervene in this decision. Using the deontological ethical theory of a duty of care, a response on the part of a nurse to this request is presented. The report explores options other than remaining in the hospital and offers a literature-based foundation for the intervention decision undertaken by the nurse. INTERVENING IN A HEALTH CARE ETHICAL ISSUE Health care providers face multiple challenges as they attempt not only to develop the most appropriate treatments and interventions for patients based on a respect for patient autonomy and rights, but on their recognition that patients may have conflicting needs and interests that affect their health care choices. As noted by Zussman (2004), making ethical |

Introduction Your mother always told you to do it. You know you need to do it. And you feel better when you do. So why is it so hard to eat a good breakfast every day? Maybe because the pizza and soda you had last night is still with you, and a bowl of oatmeal doesn't sound that good right now. The truth is, though, that eating breakfast is really important to your health and well-being, and it's worth taking another look at your breakfast ha |

Contemporary or modern art as described by H.W. Janson (666) asserts the freedom of an artist to create a new style and provides the artist with the mission of defining the meaning of his time and potentially to reshape society through art. Certainly, the terms "contemporary art" and "modern art" are complex in that they refer to what Janson (666) calls a succession of "isms" which have emerged, flourished, and been replaced by a vast variety of new forms, styles, techniques, and potentials. From the Kantian perspective as described by Preziosi (84-96), bringing an aesthetic judgment to bear on these various "isms" is challenging at best. It is unlikely that there is anything that can be universally claimed with respect to how Kant woul |

Because of their social structures, organizations are political in nature. Because politics has traditionally been associated with Machiavellian maneuvers by managers or is viewed as somehow unethical, the political skills needed by a manager for success have been largely ignored in the professional literature. As Young (100) notes, "Organizational political skills have been generally neglected in management literature. Managers who lack the requisite political skills inevitably run into difficulties on the job that reasoning and experience alone won't solve." This analysis will discuss the growing importance of political skills in today's business environment and their impact on management. Politics and political skills in leaders are becoming recognized as critical to the success of contemporary organizations. As Gautrey (11) writes, "Effective use of political skill will become increasingly important to a manager's career." In a survey of 600 global |

Our Constitution and our Declaration of Independence were based on the idea that all men are created equal. What this really meant then and means even more today is that all men should have equal opportunity for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Affirmative Action is the one sure legal means to make that possible for everyone, regardless of race, religion or gender. ""Affirmative Action is a policy designed to create a nondiscriminatory environment for the management of human resources and the distribution of economic benefits...It means taking a second look to be fair to everyone who applies for a job or admission to college." (Anderson PG). In 1964, Congress passed the Civil Rights law, but even as an African-American now has been elected as our next President, too many blacks and other minorities- including women- do not have a fair opportunity to move up in the work place and earn the same salaries as white males. We have to enact more legislation that absol |

Concert 1: Kansas City Symphony, November 29, 2008 The Kansas City Symphony, conducted by Juanjo Mena, dedicated an evening on November 29, 2008 to a combined Russian-Spanish program. Mena, the guest conductor was clearly instrumental in selecting the program, which opened with the Arriega Overture to "Los Esclavos Felices." In the first half of the program, South African pianist Anton Nel played the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto Number 2 in a style that was cool but not excessively romantic. Nel provided a brief encore with the Scribin Etude for the Left Hand. The more appealing part of the program consisted of Bizet's Carmen Suite Number 1 and two suites from De Falla's "El Sombrero de Tres Picos" ballet. These pieces were played by the orchestra with confidence and enthusiasm. This suggested that they were enjoying the music as much as the audience. Kenneth Lawrence, the Symphony's first English Horn, had an excellent solo in the Miller's Dance of the De Falla Suite. |

Netflix is a video rental company whose primary business model is that of a subscription content service. Customers rent DVDs via the Internet delivered by mail or download movies directly from the Internet via streaming to their home PCs ("Media Center," n.d.). Customers select from several Netflix subscription plans offering varying numbers of DVDs/downloads per month and then choose the DVDs they want to watch next from an online database. The company's revenue model is that customers pay for subscriptions in order to obtain viewing privileges of a certain number of DVDs per month. Netflix is part of the video rental industry, which has changed substantially in recent years, in large part due to the advent of Netflix. Netflix's policy of not charging late fees was eventually adopted by Blockbuster as a move to regain competitive advantage. In addition, the contents of Blockbuster stores are changing because the bulk of their business is no longer selling DVD rentals, "Y |

What we have learned in the dramatic price changes in the last few months is that, contrary to economists' belief, the world's demand for oil is elastic. It has been assumed up to now that people would not be willing to change their demand for oil significantly based on a change in price. Now we know better. People, and Americans in particular, can change their demand for oil. But if it done only on the basis of consumption, and there are no substitutes, the change comes at the price of terrible economic shocks. By investing in other types of energy, we can wean ourselves off slowly and without terrible effects. It is not only the U.S.'s dependence on oil that Obama's policies seek to change. We consume the greatest amount of oil in the world, both through direct usage and in the products that other countries make for us. Change here leads the way to change all over the world. The cost of energy is huge in any sort of manufacturing. If America can reduce its energy cost |

Romantic comedies are an enduring film genre for a number of reasons. They are popular with audiences because they are typically funny, sexy, and romantic. Happy endings are another element of the genre that continues to keep romantic comedies popular with audiences. Romantic comedies are also popular with producers, as successful ones like Pretty Woman and When Harry Met Sally make significant sums of money and are less expensive to produce than big action films or other special effects laden movies. As one film critic offers, "genre can affect the form, structure, style and content of a movie" (Genre, 2008, p. 1). Characters in different genres act and are portrayed in different ways, like women in Westerns typically being good and unattractive or bad and loose. The same is true with the treatment of men and women in romantic comedies, each of whom is sharply defined. This analysis will explore the various elements of the romantic comedy genre in film, from th |

The culture of most Asian civilizations, including that of China, has been described by Sodaro (2004) as collectivist, oriented toward certainty, respectful of authority, and resistant to the influence of external values, norms, and constructs. This particular view of Asian culture in general and Chinese culture in particular suggests that resistance to aesthetic influences emerging from non-Oriental societies would be strong. However, in recent years there has been a dramatic increase in the use of various plastic surgery procedures among Asian women in pursuit of a more "Caucasian" or "Western" appearance (Kobrin, 2004). The purpose of this research report is to discuss and analyze the phenomena of plastic surgery by Asian women in the larger context of transformations occurring in Asian culture. Guterl, Hastings, Muzumdar, Schafer, Lee, and Kolesnikov-Jessop (2003) reported that one of the most noticeable cultural transformations occurring in Asia in recent years is the gr |

Introduction: According to an article by Lawrence Peikes writing in HR Magazine (2004), both employees and employers must understand their respective responsibilities and rights in the workplace. An area in which the law is evolving involves an employer's right to fire an employee at-will. Many companies follow the employment-at-will doctrine, which means an employer, at least in theory, has the right to fire an employee at any time and for any reason, with or without advanced notification and with or without any form of severance pay. Both State and federal laws define instances in which an employee's firing is wrongful and actionable. For example, an employer cannot terminate or otherwise discriminate against an employee on the basis of the employee's race, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability, or for engaging in union related activities. The law considers such actions as discriminatory and firing would be considered actionable under the legal doctrine of wrongful |

"Hell no! We won't Go" is one of the memorable (or, for some disturbing) shouts uttered by many young people during the Viet Nam war- a war as unpopular as the current Iraq war. The difference was then that the cause was anti-Communism and the need to prop up a regime in South Vietnam that was as corrupt as any but was anti-Communist. John F. Kennedy was supposed to have said about that government: "They're bastards. But they're out bastards!" One needs to examine why there was so much unrest and opposition to the war among young, mostly college-level or college-educated Americans. One reason, of course, was that there was a draft. Young men were forced, by lottery to go into the armed forces to fight a war tens of thousands of miles from home, against an enemy who used military tactics not taught at West Point, and a war where returning veterans painted a terrifying picture about jungle conditions and the viciousness of the Viet Cong and all North Vietnamese and their Communist Chinese and Russian allies. One problem that turned much public opinion against student unrest was that those who protested the war were seen as the "privileged"- those able to avoid milita |

This brief essay describes alternative strategies for designing research methodologies for a report or academic dissertation. Researchers often elect to use what are called mixed methodologies when considering various phenomena. Johnson and Onwuegbuzie (17) suggest that the mixed methods research paradigm provides far greater insight into particular issues than either qualitative or quantitative research alone. This is because the combination of both approaches captures greater sensitivity of data, integrates theory with empirical studies, and allows the researcher to thoroughly assess what is already known about the issue under examination and to then extend this knowledge by |

According to an essay published online on the Wikipedia website, Big Hairy Audacious Goals were first proposed by Jerry Porras in a 1996 article entitled "Building Your Company's Vision." A BHAG is an audacious 10 to 30 year goal to progress steadily towards an envisioned future. A true BHAG is clear and compelling. It serves to focus effort, and acts as a catalyst for personal and professional and spiritual growth and development. Five of my BHAGs are: 1. To become a best-selling author within the next 10 years in either fiction or nonfiction book writing 2. To find and marry the person of my dreams 3. To become a millionaire |
