Objective The survey was designed to assess the amount of physical activity people in a specific community get on a regular basis. This does not just include "planned" physical activities such as workouts at the local gym but also "incidental" daily physical activities performed such as walking or climbing stairs. Public health campaigns such as Healthy People 2020 have identified physical activity as an important health indicator relevant to a number of public health issues including obesity, heart health, diabetes, and cancer. Because community health, or more specifically heart health within the community, is also related to specific characteristics of the community (ethnics set-up, availability of service centers, urban planning, etc.) the survey also included items related to the characteristics of the community surveyed. Research population: Community - Community Health Healthy People 2020 is a public health initiative aimed at improving the overall health of |

Employee Benefits and Human Resource Management Introduction Human resource management is concerned with the issues that are associated with the human capital-the employees-of organizations. Human resource management functions in private and public organizations, for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, and can have far-reaching economic and legal effects within organizations. Today, human resource managers must be prepared to develop programs that help attract and retain high-quality employees while keeping costs low. Traditional benefit programs, including pensions and health care, are increasingly viewed as high cost items by many employers, with the result that alternatives for funding and providing these benefits are being sought. At the same time, organizations are expanding their concept of benefits to include a quality work environment that includes on-site child care, the ability to telecommute, and flexible scheduling that can accommodate t |

The history, the development, and the future of global financial centers Abstract This study focused primarily on major global financial centers. While there are approximately 17 global financial centers, there are only six major global financial centers. London, New York, Hong Kong, and Singapore are the most solid of these six major global financial centers. These four major global financial centers are likely to remain in that status for the foreseeable future. At present. London and New York are the most influential global financial centers. Hong Kong has a strong potential to join the most influential group. The emergence of additional major global financial centers is a strong possibility because regulatory and taxation actions by government may (a) weaken the positions of some of the major global financial centers, while (b) governments in some other global regions may target these threats as a strategy to promote their own global financial centers. There are now si |

Economic Profile of Brazil According to the CIA World Factbook, Brazil has steadily improved its macroeconomic stability, building up foreign reserves, and reducing its debt. In 2008, Brazil became a net external creditor and two ratings agencies awarded investment grade status to its debt. After record growth in 2007 and 2008, the onset of the global financial crisis hit Brazil in September 2008. Brazil experienced two quarters of recession when global demand for Brazil's commodity-based exports dwindled and external credit dried up. However, Brazil was one of the first emerging markets to begin a recovery. By exploiting its vast natural resources and its large labor pool, Brazil is South America's largest economy and one of the fastest to recover after the global economic downturn. The CIA reports the following data about Brazil's economy for the year 2010: . GDP was estimated to be $2.17 trillion USD . Real GDP growth was estimated to be 7.5% . GDP per capita was estimated to be $10,800 . The labor force was estimated to be 103.6 million |

American Civil Rights Icons: Profile Format Introduction The American civil rights movement "encompasses more than three centuries of struggle against racial discrimination" (Arsenault 126). The movement culminated in the organized protests and civil rights legislation of the 1950s and 1960s, and some authorities argue that a seminal event in this struggle occurred in 1955, when an African-American woman named Rosa Parks refused "to move to the back of a Montgomery, Alabama bus as required by city ordinance" leading to a boycott after which "the bus segregation ordinance was declared unconstitutional" ("The Civil Rights Movement" 1). A number of heroes of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s in the United States can easily be identified. This list includes Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, and the group known as the Little Rock Nine, "the first black teenagers to attend all white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957" ("Heroes of the Civil Rights Movement" 2). To construct a profile of these and other i |

This paper analyzes and compares two classic poems that deal with the subject of death, Emily Dickinson's "Because I Could Not Stop for Death" and Dylan Thomas's "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night." One personifies it as a silent, courtly, and inevitable companion, the other vilifies it as an enemy to be battled. Both acknowledge its power in six brief stanzas, using simple words and few lines, and both continue to be memorable and powerful works as much because of their simplicity as for the universal voice which each applies to the end of every human life. Dickinson's poem, written in the first person, turns Death into a polite escort who "kindly stopped for me," taking the speaker away from the world toward immortality and eternity. The carriage in which they ride slowly passes three vistas, each symbolizing a stage of life. First is the stage of childhood, "where children strove/At recess, in the ring," the reminder that every life begins with learning and playing. Without using any words to evoke sound, Dickinson nevertheless makes the reader hear laughter and activity. Next come "the fields of gazin |

Thomas Hobbes, the English philosopher, lived in the early seventeenth century during a time of civil war in England and conflict throughout the continent of Europe. As a result, he was a first-hand witness to the damage that is caused by warfare and chaos. This had an impact on the political philosophy that Hobbes developed in his 1651 book Leviathan. As argued in the book, people are naturally inclined to fight against each other. In order to maintain social order, people need to be controlled by the power of a strong, authoritative ruler. However, Hobbes also argued that people must consent to be governed in order for a ruler's power to be legitimate. This consent is obtained through a concept that Hobbes called the social contract. The following paper will be concerned with the social contract and how it came into being. It will be argued that the social contract provides a justification for the power and authority of the modern state, even though Hobbes' emphasis on the need for a |

Mass Media Introduction In "Mass Media: For the Many, by the Few," Michael Parenti argues that despite claims by mainstream media of being "free and independent, objective and neutral...the 'watchdogs of democracy'", today's media "behave more like the lapdogs of plutocracy" (163). As Parenti explains: "Only six giant conglomerates-Time, Warner, General Electric, Viacom, Bertelsmann, Walt Disney, and News Corporation-own most of the print publications, movie studios, record labels, and radio and television programming in the U.S." (163). This is down from twenty-three owners in 1989, due to the passage of the 1996 Telecommunications Act, abolishing an anti-trust rule that limited the number of radio and television stations a corporation could own in one market or area. Increasingly condensed ownership of mass media has led to increasing bias, control and what amounts to censorship by media bosses in American society. The left has become unable to compete in |

In an article in Scientific American, Zweibel, Mason and Fthenakis (2008) describe the problems of using fossil fuels to meet the nation's energy needs. The authors provide a plan for switching to the use of solar power by the year 2050. The article includes information on the technologies, infrastructure and financial incentives that are needed for converting to solar power. A key point in the article is the importance of inc |

Leadership Models for Health Care For the past twenty-five years, leadership research has generated an extensive number of leadership models. While some of these leadership models are more suited for specific organizational contexts than others, the following selection is particularly useful for governmental, for-profit, and not-for-profit health care organizations. Transformational Leadership, as the name suggests, is a leadership model that emphasizes the implementation of change within an organization. The notion of change used in this theoretical model does not just pertain to organizational structure but also to change in followers (Bass & Riggio, 2006). Transformational leaders motivate followers and thus enhance their performance and willingness to embrace change. Ideally, leaders using a transformational approach enable followers to become leaders themselves by encouraging them to take ownership of their work, to develop their own identity and thus positively contrib |

Three Questions on Doubt: A Parable As a parable, this play teaches that acting as if someone's morality is certain when there is reasonable doubt is wrong. Sister Aloysius speaks as though she is positive that Father Flynn has molested Donald Muller, and she not only confronts him about it but also confides her suspicions to Sister James. Ultimately, she has him removed from his post and transferred to another parish based on her moral certainty that he has acted inappropriately with Donald, and this has not only forced Father Flynn to remove Donald from being an altar boy but also damaged his reputation. In the end, when she confesses to Sister James that she has doubts, the reader realizes that Sister Aloysius is probably wrong about her suspicions |

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) The Diagnostic Statistical Manual classifies Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) as an Axis II personality disorder (American Psychiatric Association. & American Psychiatric Association. Task Force on DSM-IV., 2000). Characteristic of BPD are significant problems with affect regulation, impulse control, interpersonal relationships, and self-image (Lieb, Zanarini, Schmahl, Linehan, & Bohus, 2004). Another diagnostic criterion according to the DSM-IV is inconsistent mood. The exact etiology of BPD is unknown, although it is believed that various factors contribute to the development of BPD. Neurobiological factors might contribute to the development of BPD although these factors are to date poorly understood (Lieb, et al., 2004). BPD sufferers often have a family history of unstable relationships, sexual abuse, family violence, and childhood neglect (Lieb, et al., 2004). Accordingly, it is believed that the symptoms first emerge in child |

Economic incentives can be used to encourage people to switch to the use of solar energy. One idea to support this argument is the fact that we must do something to reduce our dependence on fossil-fuel energy sources. These sources, which include coal, oil and natural gas, create pollution and thereby threaten the health of the planet and all life on it (Zweibel, et al., 2008, p. 64). Fossil fuels also cause other serious problems, such a |

It's typical to get a bit nervous before and during a big test; nerves especially skyrocket when you experience the "tip of the tongue phenomenon" (Stangor, 2006). This term describes "the experience of being certain that we know something that we are trying to recall, but yet we cannot quite come up with it" (Stangor, 2006). By incorporating principles of psychology concerning memory ("the ability to store and retrieve information"), studying can become more efficient and more effective (Stangor, 2006) |

Severe and Persistent Mental Illness 1. What Is Severe (or Serious) and Persistent Mental Illness, or SPMI? Severe and persistent mental illness, or SPMI, refers to a variety of mental health problems that result in severe disability. People have typically associated it with schizophrenia, but a more current understanding classifies the severely and persistently mentally ill individuals under various psychiatric diagnoses. Very interestingly, Dr. John Spollen reports in "Perspectives in Serious Mental Illness" that a proper understanding of what SPMI is cannot be gained through an understanding of a DSM diagnosis (n.p.). He adds that "there is a difference in culture when people speak of SPMI" (ibid.). Treating people with SPMI involves much more than simply managing medication. According to Dr. Spollen, "it should include multidisciplinary treatment rather than just a physician, that a biosocial rather than a purely medical approach is often used, and that functional outcomes, |

Motorola, inc.: case analysis focusing on company strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats, strategy, and recommended action 1. Describe the salient opportunities and threats that exist in Motorola's external environment. At the time of this case in November 2008, Motorola, Inc. had just announced a decision to postpone a planned split of the Company into two separate business enterprises. The decision to postpone the planned split of the Company was due in large part to conditions in the external environment of the organization. The United States and the world had just recently become aware of the onset of a severe economic meltdown and financial collapse. This situation created uncertainty for the Company, its competitors, and its customers. The strategic threats stemming from this situation were more numerous and more serious than were the opportunities that remained in the external environment of the organization. Uncertainty created a threat to the planned str |

This paper compares and contrasts the experience of the winter encampment at Valley Forge by General George Washington's Revolutionary troops through two letters written at about the same time, February of 1778. Both describe hideous living conditions, but while Washington's plea for help from the governor of New York details those conditions in agonizing detail, the other letter, from Lieutenant William Barton, is focused more on a concern for news of his family. Washington's statement that his men remain brave and focused on the fight is contradicted by Barton's stated willingness to come home if needed. Yet the information in Barton's letter is tempered by a subsequent letter from a fellow officer revealing Barton's desperate ill health. The letters present considerable insight into a dire and treacherous moment in war, when individual needs battle with the needs of the army as a whole, and a leader struggles with making his case compelling enough to inspire assistance yet hopef |

Arrow of the Blue-Skinned God and Invitations to Love Jonah Blank's Arrow of the Blue-Skinned God and Laura M. Ahearn's Invitations to Love: Literacy, Love Letters, & Social Change in Nepal add a dimension of understanding to the study of South Asian culture. Blank's book is essentially a travelogue, but it is much more than that by virtue of including his observations and insights about South Asian culture and customs. Ahearn's book is an ethnographic study specifically focused on the culture and customs of Nepal. Both books deal with the transformation in South Asian culture from traditional ideas of marriage to modern, westernized ideas. South Asian culture today embraces both the arranged marriages of the past, based on duty, and the western concept of marriage for love, and a mix of both still exists throughout the region. In Arrow of the Blue-Skinned God, Blank ties together family, religion, and marriage as interconnected ideas that impact each other. H |

Healthy Fast Food Is Not An Oxymoron Introduction America's children confront an obesity epidemic. Many point to fast food as the culprit. This casual causal connection has led to toy bans on children's meals that do not meet nutritional guidelines in cities like San Francisco and others. Bernstein (2011) notes toy bans are designed "to discourage restaurant chains from tempting youngsters to consume high-calorie, sodium-laced friend fare" linked to increasing levels of obesity in children (p. B1). Los Angeles has taken a different tact all together, banning new fast-food restaurants in South Los Angeles, a major portion of the city that has "significantly higher rates of poverty and obesity than other neighborhoods" (Medina, 2011, p. 1). Despite these draconian measures to resolve the obesity epidemic in the U.S., fast food is not the same thing as unhealthy food in many cases. For this reason, such measures to control individual choices in the U.S. are misplaced, |

Amazon's Value Chain Adaptation Amazom.com is clearly one of the true successes of the at times faltering dotcom phenomenon. The value chain that the firm has created depends upon several factors: 1) Amazon has no bricks-and-mortar retail outlets and is entirely virtual; 2) the firm began business with its own warehouses to increase the speed and reliability of order delivery; 3) the company provides an online selling venue for other businesses that supply the company with goods and services that expand those that Amazon.com possesses; and 4) the firm uses economies of scale to discount pricing on a wide range and variety of synergistic and no-synergist products or services, thus undercutting competitors (E-Business Strategy - Virtual Value Chain, 3). The firm has optimized its value chain by moving |

Carole King and the Music of the Seventies Carole King is a pivotal figure in the music of her generation. Charles Gillis reflects that in 1970s America, the popular music was an eclectic collection of new styles that made the term "rock & roll...nearly meaningless." During the 1970s, the Beatles broke up, Elvis Presley died, and instead of the familiar rock 'n' roll sound that everyone was accustomed to, there were myriad subgenres, such as soft rock, hard rock, folk rock, punk rock, and disco music, just to name a few (Gillis). Instead of Elvis and the Beatles, Americans began listening to the Bee Gees, David Bowie, the Electric Light Orchestra, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen, and Three Dog Night, with easy listening groups like the Carpenters rising to popularity and Bob Marley and his reggae music beginning to get noticed (Gillis). Part of this new musical landscape consisted of female singers like Carole King, whose soulful tunes talked a |

"A Good Man Is Hard to Find" and "Revelation" The grandmother in Flannery O'Connor's short story "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" and Ruby Turpin in her story "Revelation" have much in common. The grandmother chatters incessantly, oblivious to the annoyance she is causing others and preoccupied with what she wants to the exclusion of anyone else's feelings and needs. Ruby is outwardly pleasant to everyone but inwardly critical, because she again is preoccupied with her own needs and makes constant comparisons between herself, whom she holds in high esteem, and others around her, most of whom she finds fault with. Both women are Christian, and both suffer violence at the hands of another. Shinn (ix) points out that O'Connor "used violence to convey her vision because she knew that the violence of rejection in the modern world demands an equal violence of redemption-man needs to be struck by mercy; God must overpower hi |

ED 522 TD Questions 1. There are advantages as well as disadvantages to using games and other multimedia activities as a part of learning. While it is true that the use of games can have disadvantages such as wasting time, entertaining instead of informing, and causing problems with class control, the advantages far outweigh these. Game-playing can promote active learning, teamwork, and heightened motivation, and they are often opportunities to engage in problem solving, communication, and critical thinking (Patel, 2008, p. 21). Games can incorporate repetition to help students remember important information, and they can help students build confidence with the subject matter that improves their interest in the class. Overall, games can impact learning positively. |

This paper will be concerned with the leadership style of Bill Clinton, who served as Governor of Arkansas as well as the 42nd President of the United States. Clinton was born in 1946 in Hope, Arkansas. He received his education at Georgetown University and Yale University. After graduating from Yale, Clinton entered a career in politics as a member of the Democratic Party. In 1978, he was elected Governor of the State of Arkansas. Over the following years, he served five terms as Governor. In 1992, he won the election to become President of the United States. He was reelected in 1996, thus serving two terms as President. Among his accomplishments as President, Clinton was involved in the passage of various new laws at the federal level. During his second term, he was impeached on perjury charges following his effort to cover-up an affair that he had had with an intern named Monica Lewinsky. However, he was acquitted in the Senate trial that occurred in 1999. Clinton used a cha |
